Moisturizing refers to replenishing oil in the skin, where hydration refers to restoring water content. Very dry skin loses more water than other skin types, and therefore benefits from a rich emollient cream that will enhance the skin's barrier function and slow water evaporation through the skin so that it can stay plumped and hydrated. Oily skin doesn't necessarily need moisturizers to flood it with oils, but benefits from gel-creams that give sheer nourishment to prevent the skin from having to over-produce oil in order to compensate for being dehydrated. Depending on the season and the weather, skin may have different needs on different days - adding a small amount of a facial oil or a dense balmy moisturizer to your usual moisturizer will enable you to "tune" your moisturizer to fit your skin's changing needs. Overnight you can get away with a richer cream than during the day since you don't have to worry about applying makeup on top or looking overly shiny, so normal to dry skin types can use a sheerer cream during the daytime and apply a more intensive treatment overnight. For very dry skin, applying one layer of moisturizer at bedtime, letting it absorb, and then applying a second layer is a great trick to make sure that skin gets all that it needs without losing precious moisture to your pillowcases while you sleep.
